Six Healthy Habits for a Positive Attitude
June 9, 2020
Having a positive attitude means being optimistic about situations, interactions, and yourself. People with positive attitudes can remain hopeful and see the best even in difficult situations. While a positive attitude won’t necessarily eliminate stress, it can equip you with the tools needed to manage the stresses of everyday life in a healthy way.
Keep a gratitude journal—Intentionally focus on the good parts of your day, and write down what you are grateful for each day. You can pull out your journal and read it on difficult days.
Reframe your challenges—Embrace challenges as adventures instead of resisting an experience for growth. You might be surprised to find that you will learn and grow from the experience.
Use positive words to think about and describe your life—The words we use have a lot more power than we think. You know that running dialogue you have in your head? It’s present all day, every day, and it can have a tremendous impact on your state of mind. This internal dialogue talks us through life’s experiences, and is fueled by uplifting, understanding, and kind thoughts. The power of positive thinking should never be underestimated. What we choose to focus on becomes a prominent factor in our realities. Positive self talk leads to a more positive and uplifting outlook on life.
Replace have with get—This helps us find gratitude in things we are accustomed to having. It’s easy to see something as a chore, even if it really is an opportunity we are happy to have. Remind yourself by saying “I get to” instead of “I have to” when thinking about a task to foster a more gracious mindset.
Notice humanity and compassion in times of distress—People rise up in challenging times and show love and selflessness. Time and time again, individuals and communities have demonstrated that the worst situations tend to bring out the best in people. In every moment of darkness, there are countless moments of light – small gestures of compassion and connection that allow people to show who they are and what matters to them.
Make someone else smile—Our attitude and expression has a tremendous impact on those around us. When you make someone smile, it makes you feel good. It brightens both their day and yours, and makes both of your lives better.
