Everything we do at Columbia MD in our Infant and Toddler program, from our top-notch curriculum to our room setup and down to the very gestures we use, is specifically designed to give our students the best possible environment for individual development.

At this stage of growth, it is commonly perceived that if the basic needs were met—keeping babies clean, dry, fed, dressed, and loved—the child would have an ideal environment. But every experience, even at this age, is an opportunity for learning—not just the traditional “book learning,” but understanding social mores, developing good habits, and promoting a positive mentality toward one’s education and community. The first years of an infant’s life are crucial for establishing these principles, and our curriculum is specifically designed to encourage this mental development while keeping a safe, welcoming environment.


Our caregivers turn even basic care into a form of unique learning, paying individual attention to every student in his or her classroom. Even feeding and diapering builds trust and security, and allows for caregivers to help initiate language skills by talking to their students.


We encourage a safe, open environment to allow our infants and toddlers the opportunity to explore and engage their curiosities with interesting areas and intriguing objects. Caregivers always remain close by as our students learn principles of cause and effect and develop confidence in their actions.


Columbia Academy’s approach to our Infant and Toddler curriculum is based on a learning plan for meeting the emotional, physical, social, and cognitive needs of children, using developmentally appropriate practices in a supportive and nurturing environment. “Our teachers create an atmosphere that is rich in academics and personal growth, cultivating an enthusiasm for learning while developing a strong foundation. We implement enriching curriculum and educational experiences at the most appropriate times of a child’s development to ensure social, emotional, intellectual, linguistic, and motor skill growth—all without ever sacrificing fun! Two-year-olds are introduced to foreign language, physical education, computers, and music.”


Our sensory table encourages problem solving skills, and a sense of community with peers working side-by-side. Our sensory toys and materials encourage creativity, and the play involved promotes a positive feeling associated with learning.



6:30 AM - 9:00 AM  Welcome! Play activities and Learning Centers available. Parent and child greeted upon arrival, transitions provided Diaper checks upon arrival, and at least every two hours thereafter. Hands and face washed after diapering and before and after meals.
6:30 AM - 8:00 AM  Children may bring and eat breakfast from home (Children return to play as breakfast is completed)
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM  Open Center Exploration
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM  Circle time, all are encouraged to participate
10:00 AM - 10:30 AM  Snack
10:30 AM - 11:00 AM  Outdoor Play. Indoor large muscle play substitute for outdoor play in inclement weather.
11:00 AM - 11:10 AM Transition activities (hands and faces washed)
11:10 AM - 11:20 AM Story Time
11:20 AM - 11:30 AM  Lunch Preparation (children assist)
11:30 AM - 12:00 PM  Lunch
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM  Nap Time
