SOUPER BOWL takes place at Columbia Academy with much success!

Monday - February 15, 2016

What does the Super Bowl mean to most? Good snack food, great half time show, an engaging game, and of course, the captivating commercials. But for Columbia Academy the Souper Bowl takes on a different meaning. For 3 years, the staff, students and their parents at Columbia Academy collect soup, cans and non-perishable food items for the Howard County Food Bank.

Most don’t realize that nearly a half million Marylanders are hungry because they lack the funds necessary to buy food. Unfortunately, many of those currently going hungry are children. To combat childhood hunger, Columbia Academy and WJZ13 teamed up for the Souper Bowl 2016 Food Drive.

This year, Columbia Academy challenged their five schools to collect an all- time high of 2,000 food items. The students were offered a few incentives to take part in this worthy cause and the students of Columbia Academy’s Pre School and Elementary and Middle School students were able to wear their favorite sports jerseys on the last day of January while bringing in a donation for the month. All 5 schools were able to celebrate with a pajama party this week because they did reach their goal. In fact, the collection total was double their original goal.

On Friday, February 12th at 12:45 pm, Columbia Academy will deliver 4,000 food items to the Howard County Food Bank. When Columbia Academy called Liz Crammond, Food Bank Manager for Community Action Council of Howard County to tell her how much they would be delivering she was very surprised and she said, “Thank you to you and all of the Columbia Academy staff and families that donated to the 2016 Souper Bowl food drive.”

Patti and Tom Kincaid, owners of Columbia Academy said, “We strongly believe in the educational value derived from giving back to the community and the sense of pride and fulfillment we all feel when we are able to help others in need.”
