Souper Bowl Canned Food Drive

Tuesday - January 12, 2016

Dear Columbia Academy Families:

Did you know that almost a half million Marylanders are hungry because they lack the funds needed to buy enough food.  Unfortunately, many of these folks are children. To battle the issue, Columbia Academy and WJZ13 have teamed up for the Souper Bowl 2016 Food Drive.

We are proud to sponsor this special event which runs through February 5th! We are collecting food items to benefit the Howard County Food Bank! Food items can be dropped off at any Columbia Academy location.  Help us help others by filling the boxes in our lobbies!!  Please also ask your friends and family to drop off donations at any of our locations.

We strongly believe in the educational value derived from giving back to the community and the sense of pride and fulfillment we all feel when we are able to help others in need.  Please help us support this important cause by donating canned goods and food items today.

SOUPER BOWL CANNED FOOD DRIVE UPDATE:  Columbia Academy has a proud tradition of reaching out to the community to help people in need.  Every September, Columbia Academy partners with the MD Food Bank in Halethorpe to help hungry Maryland families.  In January, Columbia Academy will once again collect non-perishable food items during its annual "Souper Bowl" food drive.   Families, students, and staff from all five schools in the Columbia Academy organization will collect and donate "soup" and other non-perishable food items.  On the last school day of January, the students at the Elementary and Middle School may wear their favorite sports jersey as long as they brought in a can during the month.  Staff participate as well.  All food items from all schools are compiled and will be donated to the Howard County Food Bank.  To raise awareness of the problem of hungry Marylanders, Columbia Academy is encouraging everyone (staff, students, and parents) to run in the Maryland 5K and Half Marathon if we reach the goal of at least 2000 food items!  The eighth annual Maryland Half Marathon & 5K (to benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center) will be held this May 14th in the Maple Lawn community!  This is a great opportunity to contribute to TWO great causes while encouraging healthy living for us all!  So far Mr. Etzel (yours truly) and Mrs. Carr have pledged to run in the race after we meet our goal!  Others who would like to run and be listed in the next Friday Reminders should email me at!

NOW ANNOUNCING ANOTHER SOUPER BOWL INCENTIVE:  If we can bring in 2000 cans, we will schedule a pajama day for the students!!!!  So, please start collecting your cans if you have not done so already!  Non-perishable food items can be donated to any CA location in the month of January.  Thank you for working with us to support hungry Maryland families!  There are many out there who are struggling and suffering; and they need OUR help!

Thanks for helping kids in the Howard County area!
