Are you already saving up private school tuition for your infant or toddler? While it is admirable to be confident in your child and his or her potential, it is also critical to understand your little darling's specific needs before enrolling them in private academy schools or even private child care. Some New York City and Long Island parents are, for example, hiring specialists to coach their three and four year old children in how to play before sending them to elite and/or exclusive schools.

"The consultants show the kids how to hold their pencil and how to follow directions," About.com explains. Is this taking it too far? Or is it a smart and necessary measure in paving the way toward the best possible education for your child?

Introducing The Play-Date Consultant
Studies show that 80% of U.S. children will spend at least some time in child care facilities by age four. Only a very small percentage will spend one-on-one time with a relatively new play-date consultant that can cost as much as $400 per hour! Why hire a play-date consultant? In preparation for private schooling, some parents fill young children's schedules with some unlikely activities -- like learning Mandarin or how to play the violin, according to The New York Post. Some even suggest it is the most opportune time, with studies asserting that young kids are capable of absorbing and retaining more information than full-grown adults.

Even so, too many lessons and too much structure can leave toddlers and prekindergarten unfamiliar with simpler things, like sharing and coloring. Play-date consultants literally make sure children are coloring and sharing up to the most competitive private schools' standards.

Are Play-Date Consultants Necessary?
That is up to you. Always consider what is best for your child. If they won't naturally fit in at a highly competitive school and need hours on-end of structured tutoring, you may want to look into other options. There are hundreds of private schools to choose from, and many of them offer unique benefits.

Private school and private school tuition is a serious matter, but don't go to the opposite extreme and take it tooseriously. Leave your child some time for fun and for being a kid, and you can easily save the expense of a $400/hour play tutor.
