5 Best Habits for Encouraging Young Learners

Thursday - April 03, 2014

Maintaining positive learning habits with your child creates an atmosphere of learning and encourages your child to become passionate about their education.

If you start encouraging a passion for learning at a young age, your child will embrace the challenges of school curriculum and take a more active role in their education. Even if your child doesn’t seem immediately interested or curious about learning new things, you can create an active environment that encourages critical thinking and skill development.

1.       Read every day. Reading every day will improve your child’s reading comprehension as well as their spoken vocabulary. Start by reading aloud to your child and eventually switch to have your child read out loud to you, with increasingly challenging books.

2.       Spend time outdoors. Get outside as often as you can. The wonders of the outdoors will intrigue your child and make them more attuned to the physical world, sparking an inner curiosity and encouraging a passion to learn.

3.       Eat balanced, nutritious meals. Growing minds need healthy fuel. Make healthy, balanced meals for your child and start the habit early. Get lots of fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains, healthy fats, and proteins.

4.       Develop a healthy bedtime schedule. A better sleep schedule leads to more active, focused minds. Build a healthy, regular sleep schedule early and you’ll help your child set a path for a consistent, healthy sleep pattern in the future.

5.       Ask questions. No matter where you go, what you do, or how you do it, go out of your way to ask your child questions about the experience. Asking them questions will cause them to think critically about their environment, and eventually they’ll develop a habit of naturally being curious about everything in life.
