Columbia Academy recently sponsored the 2013 Maryland Half Marathon, an event designed to benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center.

The 2013 race is the 5th annual iteration of the event, held at the Maple Lawn Community in Fulton, Maryland. Sponsored by area businesses and contributed to by teams of runners, 100 percent of all net proceeds for the event go to the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center (UMGCC), one of the 25 best cancer centers in the country according to U.S. News and World Report’s America’s Best Hospitals series. The event includes a primary half marathon race as well as a kid’s “fun run,” geared toward children.

Columbia Academy formed and participated as the “Jo & Bill Graves Memorial Team,” honoring owner Patti Kincaid’s mother, who passed away from cancer. Several faculty members participated in the event, including Tom and Patti Kincaid, owners of the academic institute. Columbia Academy is a private preschool, elementary and middle school in Maryland with five locations and a popular summer camp program.

This year’s Maryland Half Marathon has brought in more than $177,000 between the sponsors and fundraisers, with 100 percent of those proceeds directly funding the cancer center. Registration for the 2014 Maryland Half Marathon will open early next year. Discounted registration fees are available before April 1. More information on the event can be found at http://www.mdhalfmarathon.com

Columbia Academy is proud to be a recurring supporter of the Maryland Half Marathon event, and continues to support their community through positive participation.
